A gentle, structured approach to growth—rooted in respect and care
My name is Joanna Tsotas, and for over a decade I’ve had the privilege of working closely with children, teens, and adults with a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities. I've worked as a behavior technician in schools, clinics, and 1:1 interventions.
Over the years, I witnessed firsthand how powerful movement, nutrition, and daily routines can be—not just for physical health, but for confidence, emotional wellbeing, mental clarity, and self-trust. As I became a certified yoga and fitness coach, I felt called to bring these worlds together and create a more holistic, supportive approach to wellness.
My goal: To help individuals feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies, develop routines that feel manageable, and build a stronger connection between body and mind.
Growth doesn’t happen all at once—it starts at the roots. With steady, consistent support, confidence and independence naturally rise.
I am a 200-hour certified yoga teacher, an adaptive fitness coach, and a certified behavior technician. I bring these practices together in an encouraging, non-clinical, and strength-based way, always honoring each person’s pace, preferences, and individuality, while celebrating wins and capabilities.
Why I do this work
I've seen how overwhelming "healthy living" can feel—especially for individuals who benefit from routine, predictability, and clear support. Too often, fitness and nutrition spaces move too fast, expect too much, or fail to adapt to different needs.
A space where:
- Progress is gentle and achievable
- Effort is celebrated
- Routines are clear and supportive
- Growth happens at a comfortable pace
My goal is not to push people to change who they are, but to help them build habits that make everyday life feel more manageable and empowering.
Each program is adapted to the person in front of me—their abilities, preferences, sensory needs, and goals. We focus on simple routines, repetition, and consistency, because that's where real confidence grows. There is no rushing. There is no perfection. There is steady progress.
My approach
Working with teens, adults, and families
I work with:
- Teens who benefit from gentle structure and encouragement
- Young adults building independence and life skills
- Adults seeking routine, accountability, and confidence
- Parents and caregivers looking for safe, respectful support
I value collaboration and clear communication. When appropriate, parents and caregivers are welcomed as partners in the process, while always respecting the autonomy and dignity of the individual.
Let's take the first step together

Why Coaching Matters
1. Individualized Guidance
Every person has unique needs, abilities, and preferences. A coach provides tailored support that respects these differences, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
2. Consistency and Routine
Many special-needs individuals thrive on predictability. A coach helps establish daily routines, reinforce habits over time, and provide accountability in a supportive, non-pressuring way.
3. Safety and Adaptation
Physical and nutritional guidance needs to be safe and appropriate. Coaches can modify exercises for mobility, sensory sensitivities, or medical considerations.
4. Emotional Support and Motivation
A coach encourages effort rather than perfection, celebrates small wins to build self-esteem, and helps participants manage stress and emotional regulation.
5. Building Independence and Life Skills
Coaching teaches participants how to structure their day, make healthy choices independently, and develop confidence to take ownership of their routines.
6. Support for Families
Coaches act as partners with parents or caregivers by providing guidance without taking over, offering reassurance and progress updates, and helping families reinforce routines at home.
Which 1:1 Program Is Right for You?
Choosing the right program is about finding the level of support that feels comfortable, realistic, and sustainable. Progress looks different for everyone, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

A pace that respects the individual
Root to Rise Coaching is built on the belief that meaningful change happens when people feel: Safe, Supported, Understood, and Respected. There are no deadlines to "catch up" and no pressure to perform. Growth happens step by step, at a pace that feels right.
If you're looking for a calm, structured, and compassionate approach to building healthy routines, the first step is a discovery call.
The Root to Rise Method
Root to Rise is built on the belief that a strong, capable body creates the foundation for confidence, independence, and personal growth.
Through accessible movement practices and supportive daily habits, participants learn to build strength, develop body awareness, and create routines that support long-term wellbeing.
Each pillar of the program supports the others, but movement remains the central focus.
Movement
Building a strong, capable body with deep roots
Movement is the foundation of the Root to Rise program. Participants develop strength, stability, and mobility through accessible physical training designed to meet each individual where they are.
The goal is not simply to exercise, but to help participants build a body that feels strong, capable, and trustworthy.
Movement practices include:
- • strength-focused exercises that build muscular stability
- • mobility and yoga-based movements that improve flexibility and joint health
- • functional training that supports everyday movement and independence
- • coordination and balance exercises that improve body control
- • learning proper form and safe movement patterns
Over time, participants develop a strong physical foundation — like roots that anchor a tree — allowing them to move with greater confidence and capability in daily life.
Nutrition
Fueling the body for strength, energy, and recovery
Nutrition is introduced as a way to support the body's ability to move, grow stronger, and recover.
Participants learn simple, practical nutrition habits that provide consistent energy without overwhelming restrictions or complicated rules.
Focus areas include:
- • understanding how food fuels the body for movement
- • building balanced meals that support strength and energy
- • choosing foods that help maintain stable energy and mood
- • hydration habits that support physical and mental performance
- • respecting sensory preferences and individual comfort with food
Food is approached as both fuel and enjoyment, helping participants build a healthy relationship with eating while supporting their physical wellbeing.
Routine
Creating structure that supports consistency and independence
Consistent routines help participants maintain the habits that allow movement and wellness practices to continue over time.
Daily structure reduces stress, builds predictability, and helps individuals feel more prepared to engage in activities that support their health.
Routine development may include:
- • morning routines that prepare the body and mind for the day
- • personal care habits that build confidence and readiness
- • scheduled movement sessions that reinforce consistency
- • evening routines that support rest and recovery
- • organizational habits that create a stable daily structure
These routines help participants develop the consistency needed to maintain their movement practice and wellness habits.
Wellness
Supporting emotional regulation and self-awareness
Physical movement and emotional wellbeing are closely connected.
The Root to Rise program introduces tools that help participants better understand and regulate their emotions while supporting overall mental health.
Participants may learn:
- • breathing techniques that calm the nervous system
- • grounding exercises that reduce overwhelm
- • movement as a tool for emotional regulation
- • relaxation strategies that support recovery
- • awareness of how the body responds to stress and rest
These practices help participants feel more balanced, resilient, and capable of managing daily challenges.
Growth
Confidence, independence, and trust in the body
As participants develop physical strength and consistent habits, they begin to experience meaningful personal growth.
This growth often appears through:
- • increased self-confidence
- • greater willingness to participate in movement and activities
- • improved independence in daily routines
- • stronger belief in their abilities
- • greater comfort navigating everyday environments
Through the development of a strong body and supportive routines, participants gain the confidence to move through the world with greater independence and self-trust.
